Caves in Washington State
Ape Cave is a lava tube that is 13,042 feet long, it is the third longest lava tube in North America. The main entrance divides the cave into two sections, the upper cave and lower cave. Ape Cave is located in Gifford Pinchot National Forest just to the south of Mt. St. Helens, WA.
Big Four Ice Caves is located on Big Four Mountain, a mountain in the Cascade Range, located approx. 20 mi east of Granite Falls. Big Four mountain is about 6,135 ft high and on its north flank, debris piles form from avalanches and are able to remain there year round because of the continuous shade provided by the mountain. During the summer, snow-melt streams flow beneath the debris piles and cause caves to be formed in the ice. The Big Four Ice Caves trail #723 is one of the most popular hikes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Big Four Ice Caves are located one mile up a fine Forest Service trail from the site of the old Big Four Inn.
