Cave diving is a type of technical diving in which specialized SCUBA equipment is used to enable the exploration of natural or artificial caves. NOTE: Some of these caves listed, may include areas for cave diving.

Caves in Alabama

Cathedral Caverns boasts two world records. Its opening is 128 feet wide and 25 feet tall, making it the largest commercial cave opening in the world and "Goliath." A stalagmite, a stalactite and stalagmite have met to form this world's largest known stalagmite. It measures 45 feet tall, 243 feet in circumference and 40 feet thick Cathedral Caverns is located near Grant, Alabama.

DeSoto Caverns main room is twelve stories high, and larger than a football field. The caverns are noted for one of the largest continuing accumulations of onyx-marble stalagmites and stalactites in the world. DeSoto Caverns is one of only four known caves in the world that still have actively growing rock formations. In 1965, an archaeological excavation undertaken by the University of Alabama unearthed the 2,000 year-old Indian burial now on display in DeSoto Caverns. DeSoto Caverns is listed on the State's Register of Landmarks and Heritage and is shown as a historic point of interest on Alabama maps.

New Fern Cave is named after the endangered American Hart's Tongue fern but is also home to other endangered species like the Grey bat and Indiana bat.

Rickwood Caverns contains some of the most massive and fascinating underground formations in the Alabama. Rickwood Caverns is maintained as an official caving park that offers more than a mile of colorful living geology, blind cave fish and an underground pool. The caverns themselves were water-formed during the Mississippian period over 260 million years ago. Rickwood Cave reveals that it was carved from an ocean bed, shell fragments and fossils of marine life are visible along the cavern ceiling and walls. Many curiosities are featured on guided tours of the "miracle mile" at Rickwood Caverns State Park, located near Warrior, AL.

Russell Cave National Monument Russell Cave was home to prehistoric peoples, for more than 10,000 years. The cave shelter archaeological site contains the most complete record of prehistoric cultures in the Southeast. Russell Cave National Monument is located in Bridgeport, Alabama

Sequoyah Caverns are best known for its reflecting water pools. The underground lakes reflect the beauty of the caves. Sequoyah Caverns are named after Sequoyah, a Cherokee Indian who singlehandly developed the Cherokee alaphabet.

Bat Cave Mine Bat Cave was a guano mine. An aerial tramway was built from the mine to "Guano Point" on the South Rim. In 1975 the abandoned mine became part of Grand Canyon National Park, some remnants of the old operation remain at Bat Cave, and on the South Rim in the Hualapai Indian Reservation. Guano Point is still a popular stop for air tours from Las Vegas, Nevada. Tourists can inspect the remnants of the old mining operation.

Colossal Cave Mountain Park had been used for centuries by prehistoric peoples. Geologists surmise that the Cave has been dry from 2,000 to 10,000 years. Colossal Cave Mountain Park is located in Tucson, and near Saguaro National Park East.

Cave of the Bells is an underground wilderness, known for its unique and varied suite of minerals and formations. Cave of the Bells is located in Sawmill Canyon at the end of a four-wheel drive road on the eastern slopes of the Santa Rita Mountains. Lake Tunnel, one of its most notable and accessible passages, leads through a large room to a permanent lake far underground. The lake is a total of 80 meters below the entrance level, it is believed that the water in the lake is heated by sources far below. Cave of the Bells is locked and gated. To obtain access to the cave, keys are available at Forest offices in Nogales and Tucson, AZ.

Coronado Cave is about 600 feet in length, 20 feet high, and 70 feet wide with several crawl ways and passages. Coronado Cave includes numerous formations including stalagmites, stalactites, columns and scallops. The Coronado National Memorial invites you to explore Coronado Cave. The limestone that houses Coronado Cave formed about 250-300 million years ago when Arizona was covered by a shallow sea. Limestone is made of the broken shells and skeletons of ancient corals, sponges, shellfish, and other creatures. Coronado Cave is a great cave to introduce others to spelunking. Coronado Cave is located near Bisbee, AZ

Grand Canyon Caverns is a natural limestone cavern 230 feet underground. They are among the largest of dry caverns in the United States. Air comes into the caverns from the Grand Canyon through 60 miles of limestone caves. You enter and leave the caverns by means of an elevator. You will view Selenite and limestone crystals, unique "winter crystals," and Helecite crystals (a very rare form of Selenite). The Grand Canyon Caverns is on the section of Route 66 at Peach Springs, between Kingman and Seligman, AZ.

Kartchner Caverns State Park presents the Kartchner Caverns, home to one of the world's longest soda straw stalactites: 21 feet 2 inches, the tallest and most massive column in Arizona, Kubla Khan: 58 feet tall, the world's most extensive formation of brushite moonmilk, the first reported occurrence of “turnip” shields, and the first cave occurrence of “birdsnest” needle quartz formations. This “live” cave is host to a wide variety of unique minerals and formations. Kartchner Caverns State Park is located in Benson, Arizona.

Onyx Cave is a series of passageways and rooms that honeycomb an outcropping of limestone in the Santa Rita Mountains. To help preserve Onyx Cave Escabrosa Grotto, Inc., leased Onyx and gated the entrance in 1974. To obtain a key to Onyx Cave, and register your reservation, you must contact Escabrosa Grotto, Inc.

Peppersauce Cave is a limestone cave found in the Santa Catalina Mountains approximately 10 miles south of Oracle, Arizona. Peppersauce Cave contains approximately 1 mile of mapped passages.

Caves in Arkansas

Blanchard Springs Caverns is a magnificent limestone cave system starting more than 200 feet underground. Blanchard Springs Caverns is administered by the U.S. Forest Service, they provide 3 different cave tours, with guides, in developed and undeveloped sections of the Caverns. Blanchard Springs Caverns is located 15 miles northwest of Mountain View, Arkansas

Bull Shoals Caverns is a limestone cave formed 350 million years ago, in the Ozark Mountains, located near Mountain Village 1890. Bull Shoals Caverns includes forests of gigantic stalactites and stalagmites of every color of the rainbow. The Ozark Mountains are one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth.

Cosmic Cavern has 2 bottomless cave lakes inside: South Lake has blind trout living in it and Silent Splendor, has 9 ft. soda straw formations. The bottom or end of these lakes have yet to be found. There is a special tour, the Wild Cave Tour, which offers an exclusive look into parts of the cavern rarely seen. There is also an authentic sluice, where you can pan for gems still in the rough. Cosmic Cavern is located in the Ozark Mountains on Hwy 21 outside of Berryville, Arkansas.

Hurricane River Cave offers tours along an ancient underground riverbed. Hurricane River Cave features stalactites, flow stone, soda straws, cave popcorn, columns, milkmoon, stalactoflats, along with rare and unique shields. A number of unusual skeletons have been discovered in the cave: saber-toothed cat and bears. The cave entrance is at the base of a towering bluff, with a waterfall (specially created for the visitor). Hurricane River Cave is located south of Branson in the Arkansas Ozarks.

Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome Cave, are sometimes called "the twin caves" because they are within 400 feet of each other. Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome Caves contain more formations per foot than any other caves in Arkansas. Crystal Dome Cavern has a spectacular eight-story dome. Mystic Caverns, has operated commercially since the late 1920s. Several guided cave tours are offered numerous times throughout the day. Mystic Caverns and Crystal Dome Cave are located between the cities of Jasper and Harrison, Arkansas.

Old Spanish Treasure Cave is one of Arkansas's most historical cavern. Old Spanish Treasure Cave has legends of buried gold. It is believed that over 350 years ago, Spanish Conquistador Soldiers buried treasure, some believe the treasure is still there. Old Spanish Cave is located between Gravette and Sulphur Springs, Arkansas

Onyx Cave is composed of natural onyx. There are chambers with names like the Witches Fireplace and Friendly Dragon. They are great caverns if you enjoy cave spelunking. Onyx Cave is located about six miles east of Eureka Springs, and is the oldest show cave in Arkansas.

War Eagle Cavern and it's underground stream was used by the Indians hundreds of years before the first settlers came to the area. Every effort has been made to leave the cavern in its natural state. War Eagle Cave on Beaver Lake is located near Rogers, Arkansas

Caves in California

Black Chasm Cavern is a show cave in California's gold rush country, west of the Sierra Nevada. It is a vertical cave, about 4000 feet long. Black Chasm Cavern is a National Natural Landmark, due to its geological diversity and spectacular helictite crystals, located in the Landmark Room. Black Chasm Cavern is located in Volcano, CA

Boyden Cave is a mile-long cavern located in Kings Canyon National Park. Boyden Cave or Boyden Cavern is located in the deepest Canyon of the United States, the 2,500m deep Kings River Canyon, which is part of the Sequoia National Forest. Boyden Cave is a privately owned cave system. Regular tours of the cave are given by a licensed guide company.

Bronson Caverns

California Caverns in the early days, the cave was known as "Mammoth Cave." California Cavern was the very first cave in the state to be opened to the public for guided tours in 1850. California Caverns is a State Historic Landmark, and claims the distinction of having the most extensive system of caverns and passageways. California Caverns is in Mountain Ranch, CA

Crystal Cave has impressively large rooms, stalactites and curtains, and ornate marble polished naturally by a subterranean stream. Crystal Cave is located off the Generals Highway in Sequoia National Park.

Lake Shasta Caverns offers spelunkers the oppurtunity to explore the inner reaches of the cave by obtaining a special permit issued by the Shasta Lake Visitor Center. There are Lake Shasta cave tours available, as well. Lake Shasta Cavernis located in Lakehead, CA

Lava Beds National Monument has the largest concentration of lava tube caves in North America. Lava Beds National Monument is an area that is pock-marked with cinder cones, flooded with ancient lava flows and the park includes Petroglyph Point, one of the largest panels of Native American rock art in the United States. Roughly ninety percent of the lava in the monument is basaltic. Lavacicles on the ceiling of a lava tube were left, Dripstone was created when lava splashed on the inside walls of the tubes. Moaning Cavern is the largest single cave on the west coast, tall and spacious enough inside to hold the Statue of Liberty. It is open to the public for walking tours, rappelling, and spelunking. Moaning Cavern is also an archaeological site, where some of the oldest human remains known in America were discovered, the bones were preserved by the mineral-rich water in the cave. Mariana Caverns

Wakulla Cave is classified as a first magnitude spring and is one of the longest and deepest known submerged freshwater cave system in the world. There was bones found, of an ancient mastodon on the bottom, scientists have identified the remains of at least nine other extinct Ice Age mammals. Wakulla Cave is located near Tallahassee.

Kaumana Cave is a lava tube that measures around 25 miles and is filled with lush flora. Kaumana cave entrance is well-marked and easily accessed via the stairs. There is no entrance fee. Kaumana Cave is located close to both Rainbow Falls and the district of Hilo, in the Big Island of Hawaii.

Kazumura Cave is among the world’s longest and deepest lava tubes. There are caves tours that consist of a two hour cave tour covering a half mile, a cave tour that lasts for four hours covering two miles, and a cave tour lasting 6 hours, the latter is only open for skilled climbers. Kazumura Cave is located in the Big Island, Hawaii.

Kula Kai Caverns is a lava tube on Mauna Loa’s lower slants. Thousand year old lava tubes. There are tours and they offer one tour that includes an other section of the caverns called the Maelstrom Cave. Kula Kai Caverns is located in the Big Island

Lechuguilla Cave is the fifth longest cave (122 miles) known to exist in the world, and the deepest (1,604 feet) in the continental United States. Lechuguilla Cave has a large variety of rare speleothems, some of which had never been seen anywhere in the world, included 20 ft. gypsum chandeliers, 20 ft. gypsum hairs and beards, 15 ft. soda straws, cave pearls, subaqueous helictites, rusticles, U-loops and J-loops. Lechuguilla Cave is located in Carlsbad Caverns National Park, New Mexico. It appears that the cave's passages may extend out of the park into adjacent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land.

Grand Caverns formerly Weyer's cave is America's oldest show cave, where gigantic stalactites point down from above and stalagmites thrust upward from the caverns floor. Cathedral Hall, 280 feet long and over 70 feet high, is one of the largest rooms of any cavern in the Eastern United States. Luray Caverns has cathedral sized rooms with ceilings 10 stories high filled with towering stone columns and crystal clear pools of water. You can also hear the sounds of the world's only Stalacpipe Organ in Luray Caverns. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is an electrically actuated lithophone operated by a custom console that produces the tapping of ancient stalactites of varying sizes with solenoid-actuated rubber mallets in order to produce tones. The instrument's name was derived from the resemblance of the selected thirty-seven naturally formed stalactites to the pipework of a traditional pipe organ. Stalacpipe Organ. Ape Cave is a lava tube that is 13,042 feet long, it is the third longest lava tube in North America. The main entrance divides the cave into two sections, the upper cave and lower cave. Ape Cave is located in Gifford Pinchot National Forest just to the south of Mt. St. Helens, WA.

Big Four Ice Caves is located on Big Four Mountain, a mountain in the Cascade Range, located approx. 20 mi east of Granite Falls. Big Four mountain is about 6,135 ft high and on its north flank, debris piles form from avalanches and are able to remain there year round because of the continuous shade provided by the mountain. During the summer, snow-melt streams flow beneath the debris piles and cause caves to be formed in the ice. The Big Four Ice Caves trail #723 is one of the most popular hikes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Big Four Ice Caves are located one mile up a fine Forest Service trail from the site of the old Big Four Inn.

Lost World Caverns were registered as a National Natural Landmark, that "feature terraced pedestal-like stalagmites, flowstone, curtains, rimstone, domepits, and waterfalls." The "walking" tour section of the cave consists of a large chamber, (1000 feet long, 300 feet wide, 120 feet high) with many formations like the Bridal Veil, Goliath, Snowy Chandelier, Ice Cream Wall, Castle and the War Club.
